The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) released new technical specifications for the 2019 edition of health care’s most widely used performance improvement tool, the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®):
The blood pressure performance measure was revised to reflect a new blood pressure target of <140/90 mm Hg for all adults age 18–85 with hypertension in accordance with updated clinical guideline recommendations.
This revision reflects a change in this blood pressure quality measure target in those ≥ age 60 from <150/90 mm Hg to the new target of <140/90 mm Hg.
It should be noted that the HEDIS “blood pressure control performance or quality measure” is used to assess quality of care within a clinic or organization based on the “percent of patients” with blood pressures at a given target.
This differs from a “blood pressure target” recommended for an “individual patient” by a clinical guideline (e.g. 2017 ACC/AHA Hypertension Guideline) based on evidence that this target will reduce the risk of a hypertension-related clinical outcome in that patient.
