Language Tools to Decrease Stigma in Diabetes

Summary

Health care providers may inadvertently use language that expresses bias or reinforces stigma. People with diabetes who perceive stigma may experience poor health outcomes including psychological distress, less social support, higher A1C levels, and increased complications. Included here are suggested language recommendations to aid clinicians in talking with patients about diabetes.
